Having had multiple FC and FD RX-7s, Justin Ong’s latest RX-7 is a humble GSL-SE.
When deciding on a First Generation RX-7, high on his list of concerns were it’s abilities that his current FC and FDs don’t possess. Certainly, the drivability of normally aspirated rotary is something that he had sorely missed, and the ability to use 87 octane fuel has also lightened his expenses immensely.
A stock GSL-SE also makes a great daily driver. It is unassuming -- no one looks at it twice. Though it still hurts to see, door dings and pot holes are not as fearsome while piloting it. That is, of course until he decides to begin restoring it.
Justin has already taken the car to the track, both Buttonwillow and Thunderhill. At Thunderhill the long straights and fast corners were tackled with finesse. Not having to worry about throttle position and boost levels makes it much easier to concentrate on the racing line. Even today, the SA22C is at home on the track.
